Wellington

On the North Island, surrounded by hills and set on a gorgeous harbour, this highly creative city is New Zealand's capital. Most backpackers stay around Courtenay Place, the nightlife district, which is also close to the Te Papa Museum. Famous for its wind, this charming city has fantastic art galleries, cafes, nightclubs and live music venues. Te Papa Museum has many visiting exhibitions and is a great place to learn about Maori culture. Also check out the beaches of the Kapiti Coast which is just north of the city and easily reached by bus or car.
